If you live on Snapchat and Amazon, your life might just be getting a whole lot better. Or possibly worse, depending on if you have bad spending habits. We’ve all been there, buying something on Amazon we don’t actually need but “it’s such a good deal, how can I not buy it?” Don’t feel too bad.
Snapchat is looking to launch a new search feature that will team them up with Amazon. Snapchat’s Android app has an unreleased feature for visual search that users can “Press and hold to identify an object, song, barcode, and more! This works by sending data to Amazon, Shazam, and other partners.”
This feature on Snapchat was originally titled Project Eagle but has since been changed to Camera Search (probably a more fitting name for the project, given the method).
According to TechCrunch, this feature on Snapchat might be tied into the platform’s context cards, which debuted in 2017. The cards hold a considerable amount of data about the user as the cards can pull up information like restaurant reservations, business contact info, movie tickets, Ubers, and more.
So, if you see something while you’re out, pull it up using the Snapchat Camera Search, you can get a list of that item (or items similar to it) that you can shop. This isn’t the first time Snapchat has featured shopping through the platform, if you didn’t already know, Snapchat has in-app purchasing.
Another feature of Camera Search could be that users can find Stories on the platform that contain products similar to what they’re searching. So, if you’re trying to see what a couch might look like in your apartment, you can search around on Snapchat to see if anyone else already has it.
